Summer got underway in Los Angeles with LA Fleet Week which is now the biggest event in SoCal over the Memorial Day weekend at the end of May. The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson was the visit ship which really drew media attention and large crowds to the LA Waterfront. The Battleship IOWA Chapter hosted two gatherings during LA Fleet Week. The Chapter held a meeting on Sunday and, after taking care of Chapter business, hosted USCG Cuttermen atop Turret 3 aboard the USS IOWA for a fun recruiting event.  There was extra excitement and a great cause for celebrating since the USCG Terrell Horne had won the Galley Wars cooking competition earlier in the day. In a real David and Goliath story, the two CS’s from the small Cutter defeated 4 other teams; a Navy team from the massive carrier, an Army team from the Army’s largest training command at FT Irwin CA, a Marine Corps team from Camp Pendleton, and a team representing the Los Angeles Space Force Base. Even more surprising, the humble Coastie chefs made it a two-peat since they had won last year’s competition too! The gathering on Saturday was SWO-centric and included officers and enlisted Surface Navy sailors from C3F, CSG-9, and the carrier during the afternoon headliner concert.
